Staff AI Engineer

About the role

WE ARE META is looking for a Staff AI Engineer to join its remote team in Portugal. You will work on cutting‑edge AI projects, building large language models and modernising legacy systems while collaborating with a diverse group of engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services and AI‑driven features.
• Lead the creation and optimisation of large language models (LLMs).
• Modernise and refactor long‑lived codebases written in languages such as Delphi, COBOL, FoxPro, PowerBuilder, WinDev, Visual Basic, or Java.
• Integrate AI‑assisted development tooling into the engineering workflow.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical strategy.

Required profile

• Minimum 8 years of experience in backend development, with at least 4 years of frontend exposure.
• At least 2 years of hands‑on experience building LLMs.
• Strong ability to work with large, legacy codebases.
• Fluent English (minimum B2 level).
