Laundry Master (M/F)

About the role

Mystic Cruises, an expedition ocean cruise line based in Porto, is looking for a Laundry Master to lead its laundry department on board. The role trains, coaches, counsels, supports and delegates the laundry staff and keeps all guest and crew linen, towels, personal clothing, uniforms, tablecloths and serviettes clean and well maintained.

Key responsibilities

• Train, coach, counsel, support and delegate the laundry staff.
• Take part in daily laundry operations, including washing, ironing and folding of bed linen, towels, tablecloths, napkins, uniforms and guest clothing.
• Keep cleaning equipment properly stored when not in use and keep the assigned area clean and tidy.
• Schedule daily cleaning of the laundry and equipment, including regular wash-downs.
• Help stateroom stewardesses on turn-around days by stripping beds, pillows and vacuuming rooms and corridors.
• Report work orders, follow up on them and assist with luggage loading as directed.
• Ensure staff comply with company policies, procedures, manuals and directives.
• Attend meetings with the Housekeeping Manager, communicate regularly with the manager and other laundry staff, and promote teamwork and continuous training.
• Follow safety requirements: proper use of personal protective equipment, safe lifting techniques, emergency plans and lifeboat drills.

Required profile

• College degree recommended.
• At least two years of experience on a cruise ship in a similar position, or hotel experience.
• Previous background in laundry and dry cleaning operations.
• Excellent leadership skills, team spirit and the ability to interact with all levels of people.
• Outgoing personality, positive attitude and friendly demeanour towards crew and officers.
• Ability to stay calm under pressure and to implement corrective actions diplomatically.

Required skills

• Good spoken and written English.
• Good communication and organizational skills, attention to detail and multitasking.
• Basic administrative skills (Outlook, Word, Excel); POS knowledge is a plus.
• Basic accounting skills.
