Design Engineer – Piping Projects

About the role

ALTEN Portugal is seeking a motivated Design Engineer to join its Life Sciences division. You will support and develop piping projects, preparing and reviewing technical documentation while ensuring compliance with GMP standards and industry regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, review and monitor mechanical engineering projects in a GMP environment, focusing on piping systems, valves, process equipment and industrial utilities.
• Prepare technical specifications, calculations and drawings (isometric, P&IDs, bills of materials) ensuring regulatory and safety compliance.
• Support definition of project requirements, monitor suppliers during manufacturing and assembly phases.
• Analyse technical proposals and contribute to equipment selection and mechanical solution design.
• Participate in continuous‑improvement initiatives to optimise mechanical processes and reliability.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (process, automation, maintenance, quality, production) to ensure successful project delivery.

Required profile

• Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• 2–3 years of professional experience in mechanical engineering, preferably in industrial or pharmaceutical environments.
• Experience working in a GMP‑regulated setting.

Required skills

• Proficiency with AutoCAD and Inventor.
• Creation and review of P&IDs and isometric drawings.
• Mechanical calculations and preparation of bills of materials.
• Knowledge of piping design, valves and process equipment.
