Senior Software Engineer

About the role

Paymentology is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and scale Java backend services that power its global payments platform. You will lead end‑to‑end delivery, shape technical strategy, and help raise the engineering bar across a fully distributed, mission‑driven team.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of backend services, distributed systems, and APIs.
• Own features from architecture through coding, testing, observability, and deployment.
• Write clean, maintainable, well‑tested code following TDD and engineering best practices.
• Break down complex technical work into manageable chunks and deliver iteratively.
• Mentor associate and mid‑level engineers, fostering technical excellence.
• Identify and implement performance, reliability, and scalability improvements.
• Participate in incident response and on‑call rotation (one week out of every five).

Required profile

• 5+ years of commercial experience with modern Java (15+, moving to 21).
• Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining distributed systems and microservices.
• Strong grasp of object‑oriented programming and event‑driven or Domain‑Driven Design concepts.
• Passion for test‑driven development.
• Solid understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and data modeling.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), containerisation, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure‑as‑Code.
• Desire to learn, grow, and collaborate in a high‑throughput, regulated domain (fintech/payments is a plus).
