Staff Electrical Engineer – Substation (San Juan, PR)

About the role

The Staff Electrical Engineer will support high‑voltage substation projects (13 kV to 765 kV) from concept through construction, working under a licensed professional engineer. The position is based in San Juan, Puerto Rico and involves both design and field activities.

Key responsibilities

• Develop complete substation design packages, including layout, protective relaying, control, grounding, lightning analysis, lighting and security.
• Perform substation calculations such as insulation, AC station service, DC systems, battery sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing and conduit fill.
• Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specifications, bills of material and other deliverables.
• Apply IEEE, NESC and other utility standards to ensure compliance.
• Support field inspections of public and private utility substation facilities.
• Research and compile project data, assist with client presentations, reports and visualizations.
• Identify and help resolve project issues, support schedule management and quality reviews.
• Participate in proposal preparation and client relationship development.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field from an ABET‑accredited program.
• Minimum 3 years of substation engineering experience, preferably in consulting.
• Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam (or equivalent).
• Excellent written and verbal communication, strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Detail‑oriented, organized, collaborative mindset and demonstrated leadership potential.
