Lead Substation Engineer 1 - Grid

About the role

The Lead Substation Engineer will apply expertise in protective relaying and control systems for high‑voltage (HV) and extra‑high‑voltage (EHV) substations, leading an engineering and design team to deliver modifications, upgrades, and new designs that meet client requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design and engineering of substation protection, control, and communications, including relay selection, SCADA concepts, and I/O assignments.
• Prepare calculations, single‑line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and engineering studies for client and peer review.
• Guide junior and senior engineers, conduct independent reviews of calculations and drawings, and coordinate with project managers, clients, and suppliers.
• Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve engineering issues; propose upgrades to existing facilities and present recommendations.
• Travel to client and vendor sites for design reviews, construction coordination, and field verification as needed.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
• 10+ years of experience in protection, control, or telecommunications for high‑voltage substations.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Full bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English (read, speak, write).

Required skills

• Protective relaying and control system design for HV/EHV substations.
• Software: SKM, ETAP, ASPEN, CDEGS, AutoCAD or MicroStation.
• Familiarity with vendor relay equipment such as SEL, ABB, GE, Areva, Basler.
• Knowledge of design codes and standards (NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, ANSI).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
