Graduate Software Engineer – Open Source & Linux (Ubuntu)

About the role

We are looking for a Graduate Software Engineer to join Canonical’s Ubuntu team in Portugal. The role offers an entry point into large‑scale open‑source engineering, working on operating systems, developer tools and distributed software that power cloud, AI, IoT and enterprise infrastructure worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and improve open‑source and commercial software products across the Ubuntu and broader Linux stack.
• Write clean, efficient production‑grade code in languages such as Python, Golang, Rust, C/C++ or JavaScript/Java.
• Participate in design discussions, global engineering sprints and roadmap planning.
• Collaborate with users, contributors and internal teams through code reviews, issue tracking and community engagement.
• Support debugging, issue resolution and customer‑facing problem solving with a focus on reliability and performance.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or a related STEM field.
• Strong academic record and demonstrated programming ability.
• Passion for open‑source ecosystems and willingness to learn quickly.
• Analytical thinking, problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.

Required skills

• Proficiency in at least one of the following languages: Python, Golang, Rust, C, C++, JavaScript, Java.
• Familiarity with Linux‑based environments, preferably Ubuntu.
• Experience with version control systems and collaborative development workflows.
