Staff Backend Engineer (FinTech)

About the role

Rain is the world’s first AI Financial Health Platform, helping millions of employees manage their money. We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to lead the technical direction of our backend platform, building core systems that connect banking, payroll, and time‑keeping data. This remote role is part of the User Tribe and will shape the foundation of new personal‑finance products.

Key responsibilities

• Set technical direction and architecture for major backend areas, turning ambiguous product goals into scalable strategies.
• Design, implement, and maintain highly available RESTful APIs and micro‑services that power web and mobile experiences.
• Build and sustain integrations with third‑party vendors and partners using message‑queuing systems.
• Establish reusable frameworks, enforce observability best practices, and continuously improve performance and scalability.
• Mentor engineers, raise the technical bar, and produce detailed technical documentation.

Required profile

• At least 8 years of engineering experience, operating at a staff or principal level.
• Proven track record designing and launching novel fintech products from concept to scale.
• Strong system‑design judgment, able to balance rapid delivery with long‑term health.
• Excellent cross‑functional communication and the ability to drive large, ambiguous initiatives to completion.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Go/Golang and Python.
• Deep experience building RESTful APIs and micro‑service architectures.
• Expertise with SQL and NoSQL databases, data modeling and optimization.
• Familiarity with message‑queuing systems such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or Flink.
• Hands‑on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, and serverless technologies.
• Effective release management with zero‑downtime deployments and CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, GitHub Actions).
