Hardware Design Engineer – Smart Cloud Factory

About the role

We are looking for a Hardware Design Engineer to join the Smart Cloud Factory team in Lisbon. In this position you will contribute to the development of electronic hardware for automotive control units, supporting Volkswagen’s vision of a fully connected, software‑enabled factory.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and review schematics and PCB layouts for automotive electronic hardware.
• Perform hardware simulations and technical analyses within the assigned development area.
• Design electronic circuit concepts for control units and support functional safety analyses (FMEDA).
• Investigate hardware failures, conduct root‑cause analysis and define corrective actions.
• Collaborate with customer engineering teams during design reviews and technical discussions.
• Support supplier management to ensure compliance with technical requirements.
• Prepare technical documentation, engineering calculations and project overviews.
• Contribute to hardware cost estimations and feasibility assessments while ensuring adherence to automotive quality standards.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Electronics or Telecommunications Engineering.
• Experience in electronic hardware design for automotive applications.
• Knowledge of functional safety standards and FMEDA methodology.
• Ability to analyse hardware failures and work with cross‑functional teams.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
