Ubuntu Package Management – Engineering Manager

About the role

As an Engineering Manager you will lead a team responsible for the technologies that underpin software management and system lifecycle experiences across Ubuntu. You will combine technical leadership with people management, shaping engineering direction while supporting the growth and development of experienced engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Define technical vision and roadmap for package management, updates, drivers, firmware and related infrastructure.
• Participate in design reviews and guide architecture decisions affecting software distribution and release processes.
• Promote engineering excellence in performance, reliability, security, compatibility and maintainability.
• Lead, mentor and develop a team of senior engineers, fostering ownership and continuous improvement.
• Plan and deliver improvements across multiple release cycles while balancing innovation with stability.
• Collaborate with desktop, server, security, release engineering, product and OEM teams.
• Engage with Debian, upstream projects and the open‑source community to evolve the technology stack.

Required profile

• Strong academic background in Computer Science, STEM or equivalent professional experience.
• Proven experience leading engineering teams, including coaching, performance development and talent growth.
• Deep expertise with Linux distribution technologies, package management systems and software lifecycle processes.
• Solid understanding of operating system architecture, release engineering and open‑source collaboration.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in a globally distributed organization.
