Staff AI Engineer (Remote, Portugal)

About the role

We are looking for a Staff AI Engineer to join our fully remote team in Portugal. You will lead the design and implementation of AI-driven solutions, working across both backend and frontend systems while mentoring junior engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Architect and develop large‑scale backend services with AI capabilities.
• Collaborate with frontend teams to integrate AI features into user‑facing applications.
• Design, train, and deploy large language models (LLMs) for various business use cases.
• Maintain and modernize legacy codebases written in languages such as Delphi, COBOL, FoxPro, PowerBuilder, WinDev, Visual Basic, or Java.
• Drive adoption of AI‑assisted development tooling across the engineering organization.

Required profile

• Minimum 8 years of professional experience in backend development, with at least 4 years of exposure to frontend technologies.
• At least 2 years of hands‑on experience building and deploying LLMs.
• Proven ability to work with large, long‑lived, or legacy codebases.
• Fluent English communication skills (minimum B2 level).
• Based in Portugal and able to work fully remote.
