Software Engineer - Optical Networks

About the role

Join Nokia's Optical Networks division in Portugal and help build ultra‑fast, high‑capacity network software that powers global connectivity. The position is hybrid, offering a mix of onsite collaboration and remote flexibility.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement high‑performance C++ applications for modern hardware architectures.
• Modernize existing systems using STL, Boost, design patterns and asynchronous/multi‑threaded techniques.
• Ensure software robustness through automated unit (GTest), integration and stress testing.
• Participate in design reviews, peer code reviews and cross‑functional projects with a global engineering team.

Required profile

• BSc or MSc in Computer Science, Telecommunications or a related field.
• Fluency in English and ability to work in an international, collaborative environment.
• Strong curiosity for modern C++ standards and a growth mindset.
• Open to junior or mid‑level candidates eager to learn and take ownership.

Required skills

• Modern C++ (OOP, memory management, algorithms).
• Experience with STL and Boost libraries.
• Asynchronous and multi‑threaded programming.
• Linux development environment.
• Version control with Git.
• Scripting knowledge (Python or Bash).
• Unit testing using GTest.
