Applications Engineer – Product Design & Development

About the role

The Applications Engineer will lead the design team in creating and adapting product concepts for BorgWarner's Viana do Castelo TTT plant. The role combines engineering analysis, customer interaction, and prototype development to deliver innovative mobility solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design team for specific product definitions.
• Create, develop and adapt product designs using internal standards, calculations, trials, measurements, bench tests and CAE simulations.
• Check and release 2D drawings and 3D models for new projects and serial production.
• Establish interfaces with customers for product specifications and validation plans.
• Present test results to internal and external stakeholders.
• Conduct D‑FMEA, define special characteristics and coordinate prototype sample production.
• Develop prototype control plans and calculate prototype production costs.
• Coordinate project development up to industrialisation kick‑off and define engineering standards.
• Perform tolerance stack‑up studies and select materials for casted, molded, bent or stamped parts.
• Collaborate with PCBA suppliers on electronic hardware alternatives.

Required profile

• Leadership experience in a design engineering team.
• Ability to interface directly with customers throughout product development.
• Strong analytical skills for validation, testing and cost calculation.
• Knowledge of materials selection and tolerance definition for various manufacturing processes.
• Familiarity with electronic hardware components and PCBA supplier coordination.

• Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations.
• Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations.
• Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (D‑FMEA).
• Tolerance stack‑up analysis.
• Materials selection for casted, molded, bent and stamped parts.
• Electronic hardware component knowledge.
• CAD 2D/3D drawing creation and release.
