Senior Back End Engineer I

About the role

Thought Machine is looking for a Senior Back End Engineer I to join its newly established Engineering Hub in Lisbon. You will own end‑to‑end delivery of complex, cloud‑native banking services, shaping architecture and product strategy while collaborating with cross‑functional teams.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain highly reliable, secure and scalable back‑end software solutions.
• Contribute to architectural standards and ensure services meet security, performance and cost targets.
• Provide thorough code reviews and set high standards for code quality.
• Investigate production incidents across multiple services, drive learning and feed improvements into prioritisation.
• Mentor less‑experienced engineers and act as a technical anchor for the team.
• Participate in hiring by leading technical interviews.
• Own work items from concept through production, managing dependencies and delivery plans.

Required profile

• Proven experience delivering complex back‑end systems in a senior engineering role.
• Strong focus on clean, maintainable code and an egoless collaborative mindset.
• Ability to solve ambiguous problems and influence technical road‑maps.
• Passion for operational excellence and continuous improvement.
