Head of English

About the role

Inspired Education, a global group of premium private schools, is looking for a Head of English to lead its English Department in Lisbon. The post-holder provides strategic direction, monitors and evaluates standards, promotes effective teaching, learning and excellent behaviour, works with all staff to drive continuous school improvement and networks with other post-holders across the Inspired group.

Key responsibilities

• Provide a clear vision, intent and curriculum maps for the department, leading collaborative planning and Schemes of Work.
• Raise academic attainment in line with school expectations and annual department improvement plans.
• Ensure pupil assessment (Cycle Tests, in-class metrics, interdisciplinary projects) is fit for purpose, standardized and monitored.
• Design and run timely intervention strategies for underachievers, communicated to SLT, HOYs, teachers and parents.
• Ensure students are entered for the right public examinations at the right stage.
• Embed whole-school Teaching & Learning practices and monitor curriculum implementation.
• Manage teacher performance, support and development within the faculty.
• Give regular progress updates to Senior Leadership during weekly Link meetings.
• Run an enrichment programme of English extracurriculars to promote a love of learning.

Required profile

• University degree in English (or a related field) and a recognised teaching qualification.
• Proven experience leading or managing an English department.
• Essential experience teaching IGCSE English.
• Ability to teach advanced curricula such as IBDP English A and/or A-Level English Literature.
• Strong networker able to collaborate with colleagues across the global Inspired group.
• Commitment to continuous professional development and keeping curriculum knowledge up to date.
• Compliance with school policies, health and safety regulations and safeguarding frameworks.
