Design Director – Lead UI/UX & Brand Design

About the role

Darkroom is seeking a Design Director to lead high‑impact UI/UX and brand design for e‑commerce clients. The role blends strategic oversight with hands‑on execution, ensuring every digital experience is visually compelling, conversion‑focused, and technically feasible.

Key responsibilities

• Lead 1‑3 UI/UX engagements, creating branded e‑commerce websites and design systems.
• Own design projects from discovery through hand‑off, presenting concepts to clients and collaborating with developers.
• Manage a growing team of 2‑4 designers, conducting weekly 1:1s, performance reviews, and skill development.
• Define and maintain component libraries and design guidelines to ensure consistency across paid media, emails, landing pages, and packaging.
• Refine internal processes with the Director of Creative and support cross‑functional teams on project planning.

Required profile

• 3‑6+ years of senior‑level web design experience for e‑commerce, with at least one year of people‑management experience.
• Strong portfolio demonstrating UI/UX, branding, color theory, hierarchy, composition, and typography.
• Self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, and comfortable leading client‑facing conversations in English.
• Proven ability to translate ambiguous business problems into clear design solutions.

Required skills

• Figma (Auto Layout, Components, Variants)
• Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
• Responsive web design
• HTML/CSS (knowledge of Tailwind a plus)
