About the role

The Substance Abuse Counselor provides therapeutic recreation services to patients recovering from substance use disorders. The role involves planning, directing, and implementing activity‑based therapy programs that support patients' mental and physical well‑being while aligning with individualized treatment plans.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive activity assessments through observation and patient/family interviews.
• Develop, organize, and lead therapeutic leisure activities such as sports, dance, music, art, and relaxation techniques.
• Design and implement activity programs that address patients' needs, interests, and treatment goals.
• Facilitate group sessions, community outings, and skill‑building exercises to promote independence and social competence.
• Adjust activities to suit specific patient groups and ensure safety at all times.
• Document progress, modify interventions as needed, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreational Therapy, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
• Minimum three years of recreation experience in a healthcare setting.
• Certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or equivalent, or clinical licensure with expressive‑therapy certification.
• Current CPR, de‑escalation, restraint, and first‑aid certifications (training provided if needed).

• Knowledge of therapeutic recreation techniques and leisure education.
• Ability to assess patient needs and develop tailored activity plans.
• Proficiency in safety protocols, emergency response, and patient documentation.
