2nd Engineer (M/F) - Seagoing

About the role

Mystic Cruises, an expedition ocean cruise line based in Porto, is recruiting a 2nd Engineer (M/F) for its seagoing ships. The 2nd Engineer reports to the 1st Engineer/Chief Engineer and executes engine room watches at sea and in port, assisting the First Engineer with machinery operations, maintenance and daily routines.

Key responsibilities

• Perform duties delegated by the Chief Engineer and First Engineer, and act as Engineer Watch Officer in the engine control room.
• Be proficient in maintenance and repair of main and auxiliary engines, ship's plants for fresh and sea water, boiler plant, emergency generators, steering gear, stabilizers, propeller shafts, stern tubes, bow thrusters, HVAC and pneumatic valves.
• Keep machinery and steering gear spaces properly rounded out to detect and report faults, and perform or direct routine adjustments and upkeep.
• Read the Chief Engineer's standing orders and follow safe working procedures.
• Manage lube oil stocks and transfers, keep spare parts in stock, and ensure critical work has a signed Work Permit.
• Use the correct PPE, keep bilges dry during watches, and log operations correctly in the oil record book.
• Specifically maintain sludge and dirty oil systems, lifeboat and tender engines, purifiers, fuel oil transfer and booster pumps, lube oil pumps, and bilge, ballast and fuel oil valves, while monitoring lube oil consumption and condition.

Required profile

• Certificate of Competence and endorsement.
• Basic Safety training covering personal survival, first aid, fire prevention and firefighting, ISPS security awareness, and crowd management.
• Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats.
• Previous experience on passenger ships.
• Excellent command of English, including Marlins Cert. English for Seafarers.
