1st Officer - Safety - Seagoing (M/F)

About the role

Mystic Cruises, an expedition ocean cruise line offering five-star service from Antarctica to the Arctic, Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, is hiring a 1st Officer (Safety) for its seagoing vessels. The officer reports to the Master and the Staff Captain, Head of Division, as assigned.

Key responsibilities

• Execute bridge watches and navigational duties, test GMDSS equipment with the Communications Officer and update related logs
• Follow the Bridge Resource Management Manual and SMS procedures
• Control storage, freshwater and bunkering operations during watch according to plans prepared by the Master and/or Staff Captain
• Keep overtime records and inform the Master of all occurrences witnessed on duty that affect ship operation and safety
• Assist with tendering and Zodiac operations under the Staff Captain
• Safety officer duties: prepare safety instruction material, train crew on safety, inspect fire and safety equipment, plan passenger muster and weekly emergency and lifeboat drills, and report each drill in detail
• Present a monthly safety report to the Staff Captain, lead accident investigations, maintain records of accidents, incidents and near-misses, take part in risk assessments, promote proper use of PPE and a safety culture, and ensure safety equipment is maintained and ready

Required profile

• Basic Polar Navigation Certificate
• Experience in ice
• Seaman's book, medical certificate, international vaccination certificate and valid passport
• GMDSS endorsement/certificate
• Basic safety training covering personal survival, personal safety, elementary first aid, fire prevention and firefighting, and medical first aid
• Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats, advanced fire-fighting, ECDIS, ARPA and basic training for ships operating in polar waters
• Preferred: ISPS Ship Security Officer certificate
