Senior Electrical Engineer – Substation

About the role

The Senior Substation Engineer will lead the preparation of design deliverables for new and modified high‑voltage (13 kV to 765 kV) electrical power substation projects. You will work with the project team through design and construction, adapting plans to budget, design constraints, and client needs.

Key responsibilities

• Lead substation projects from conceptual phase through completion.
• Develop complete substation design packages, including physical layout, protective relaying, control systems, grounding and lightning studies, lighting and security.
• Perform detailed electrical calculations such as insulation, AC station service, DC systems, battery sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing, and conduit fill.
• Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specifications, bill of materials and other required deliverables.
• Apply IEEE, NESC and other industry standards to all designs.
• Conduct field inspections of substation facilities on public and private utility systems.
• Identify, communicate and resolve project issues; manage schedule and budget under supervision.
• Ensure compliance with internal QA/QC guidelines and perform design quality reviews.
• Interact with clients and external contacts to develop relationships and prepare proposals with schedule and budget estimates.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (ABET‑accredited) with at least 7 years of substation project experience, or an EE/ME Technology degree with FE exam and 7 years experience.
• Consulting experience preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• High attention to detail, critical thinking and ability to work collaboratively.
