Senior Back End Engineer I

About the role

Thought Machine is on a mission to eliminate legacy technology from banks worldwide by building modern, cloud‑native core and payments platforms. The company has grown rapidly to over 550 employees across several global offices, including a new Engineering Hub in Lisbon. As a Senior Back End Engineer I you will own complex, end‑to‑end features while shaping architecture and product strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain highly reliable, secure, and scalable backend services using modern languages and cloud‑native technologies.
• Contribute to architectural standards, code quality, peer reviews and operational excellence across multiple services.
• Own work items from concept through production, collaborate with product managers and lead incident resolution.
• Mentor less‑experienced engineers and participate in technical hiring.

Required profile

• Proven ability to break down ambiguous, complex problems into clear, deliverable milestones.
• Experience supporting high‑throughput, distributed systems in production environments.
• Collaborative, feedback‑receptive mindset focused on client outcomes.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Required skills

• Go or Python programming.
• Kubernetes and container orchestration.
• AWS or GCP cloud platforms.
• gRPC communication.
• PostgreSQL databases.
