Lead Substation Engineer - Transmission & Distribution (San Juan, PR)

About the role

The Lead Substation Engineer will support high‑voltage substation projects from concept through construction, working under a licensed professional engineer. The role involves creating design deliverables for 13 kV to 765 kV systems and ensuring they meet budget, client, and regulatory requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Develop complete substation design packages, including layout, protective relaying, control, grounding, lightning analysis, lighting and security.
• Perform engineering calculations such as insulation, AC station service, DC battery sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing and conduit fill.
• Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specifications, bills of material and other deliverables.
• Apply IEEE, NESC and other industry standards; support field inspections and QA/QC reviews.
• Research project data, create client presentations, and assist with proposal preparation.
• Identify and resolve technical issues, coordinate with project managers to meet schedules, and maintain client relationships.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil Engineering or related field from an ABET‑accredited program.
• At least 3 years of substation engineering experience (5 years strongly preferred); consulting experience is a plus.
• Successful completion of the FE exam if holding an Engineering Technology degree.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• High attention to detail, critical thinking and organizational skills.
